The Nut House... Literally

Early this evening, I was able to get a couple of photos of Mama Squirrel in the birdhouse that her family has chosen to call home. I was able to get pretty close with the 'tail' photo (she couldn't see me coming), but had to stand a bit further back while taking the other as Mama S. was getting quite nervous as I approached.

Last weekend, we actually watched Mama S. move her babies, one by one (five, by our count) from the birdhouse to a makeshift nest in the oak tree next to our deck. Alas, that only lasted a few days. I went out one morning to find all the twigs, leaves, and nesting material laying at the base of the tree. We weren't sure where they'd gone, but it's now apparent that Mama S. carried her babies across the yard and back up into the birdhouse. Once the babes are on their own and Mama and Papa S. have moved out, we need to refurbish the birdhouse... It's gotten quite shabby looking over the past fourteen years (and not the good shabby!)...

Here's one of Mama S's relatives who came to visit me on the deck this afternoon. Actually, he/she came for a handout of peanuts rather than to visit, but that's okay... Maybe I'll have 'baby' pictures to share with you before long...

  2. Hi Donna!
How adorable is that? I love to watch the little creatures, they can be so entertaining! I always make up their dialog when my husband is around so they are talking. He probably thinks I should be in that Nut House!

  3. Hi Donna!

Awww... that is so cute! It's a sweet little home whether for a bird or a squirrelfamily! It's amazing how the Mother could squeeze into the hole!
It's nice to see a mother's instincts take over.

On a side note, to reply to your commnet on my blog, I think you and your daughters would love going for facials together, or doing some other type of spa day activity. It's fun! I never did anything like that either, but my daughter has been so encouraging in getting me to try new things.

    Thanks for your kind comments!

  9. How fun. I hand raised two baby squirrel about a year ago. They were so much fun. When they because bigger adults size. They became a handful. I set them free. One stay around for the longest... atill one day. I found him ran over. That's what i was afraid of when I decided to set them free. But wild animals can't be caged up.. they were so unhappy being in cages. They enjoyed climbing the trees. The other one I never saw him again he left for good.
