Afternoon shadows....

The late afternoon shadows are arriving earlier and earlier as the end of August approaches... This afternoon, the contrast of light and dark was so vivid, I couldn't resist snapping some photos of the sun's handiwork....

Not only are the outdoor wreaths silhouetted on the front doors, but the cutwork of the Battenburg valances is so defined at this time of the day...

A lace valance that hangs in the living room window casts its shadow on the floor above the silhouette of the rocking chair...

The lace trim of the window shades, a silverware wind chime, and even the glass knob on the jelly cupboard cast shadows in the dining room...

The late afternoon is such a lovely time of day but, oh, how I wish the days were getting longer rather than shorter!!

  1. Very nice pictures! However, I find myself getting happier and happier as the days get shorter and shorter. I can not wait for Fall and Winter and then Spring again. I HATE Summer. To hot, to crowded everywhere and kids stay outside until late at night and the dogs bark at them all the time.

Oh my heart aches for when it's dark at 5:00pm again.

    Hugs,
    Joanne

  2. I had a thing for noticing late afternoon shadows.. I like how the sun filters through.. and this reminded me of how I feel about that.. a mixture of beauty and slight loneliness.

  3. Hi Donna,
I'm not excited about winter BUT I am excited about cooler weather. I think that with daylight for so many hours in the summer, we just go and go and go. I look forward to pulling in and nesting for a few months. But then by February, HELP, I need spring. Oh are we ever happy?

    Hugs,
    LeAnn:)

  4. I love those pictures and the solitude they made me think of. I, unlike you, am loving the shortened days and cannot wait for Fall and cooler temperatures. I am sooo not a summer person and detest hot weather. I like fall. I like winter, but SPRING is my absolute favorite time of the year.

  6. Being able to be at home to enjoy the sun coming through the windows is on my list of most favorite things. The photos are wonderful and I have to agree with you - I wish the days were getting longer too.

  7. I loved your pictures! I do not want to see summer end. I refuse to relinquish my flip flops, and thats that! I find it harder as each year goes by to tolerate the hard winters. I am not a winter person, and would move south in a heartbeat, except I have three grandbabies that I cannot bear to leave.

  10. Oh what lovely pictures! I love the contrast between the dark and the light, and on your white furniture it looks extra beautiful. Love the pic through your curtains. I like battenburg lace too!

And I agree with you on not wanting winter to get here.
