Books that go bump in the night...

Not literally, of course, but I do love the girls' old spooky and/or Halloween books!

So I pulled them out of the bookcase today, browsed through them, and reminisced a bit...

Some of them were bought through the school (I think I used to get more excited about the Scholastic or Troll order forms coming home than the girls did!)...

Or sometimes we'd find a favorite at the library and then purchase a copy for ourselves. (Exception: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with the incredible Will Moses illustrations was a more recent purchase - for me!)

These all bring back such great memories of reading to the girls, either curled up on the couch or hunkered down under the covers in bed...

And then they grew up and had sleepovers and read stories to each other and their friends from books like these!! Whoooooooo!!!! Anyhow, since it is Halloween month, and since I do love children's books, I thought I'd share some of our favorites with you... I hope you all have a frightfully fun time reading some of your own favorites!

I collect children's and older teen books. I remember those scholastic book sales! Each year I could hardly wait until the day we got those order forms, and then we would also have a big book sale, where we were all taken to the cafeteria and there were tables set up with stacks of books on them, and we got to choose books! That was my very favorite day of the school year! It was tough making the choice of which book to choose, I would have taken one of each! tee hee! Thanks for stirring up that wonderful memory today!

Have a lovely day!

what a wonderful blog you have!
I love all the books.
I just met an artist from Portland, OR who takes old books (children's, cook, you name it!) and turns them into journals. She even leaves the first few pages of the book in the journal. A very fun option for when the books have been retired. Michelle at atticjournals.com.

have a happy halloween!

I LOVE Halloween picture books and you hit the nail on the head with the comment about the order forms! It's because every year around Halloween time and Valentine's Day time, those order forms would come home and I would pick out a Halloween book or a Valentine's day book. I think if I wrote a kid's book, it would be for Halloween or Valentine's day because I know that at least some would get bought up at book fairs!

Love it! There are so many there that we also have and you just made me take my own walk down that old memory lane. All my girls are "grown". 23, 18, & 17 now so these books aren't of interest to them anymore. Good thing I have little guys (9 & 5) that enjoy them now. I think I'll put them all out on the coffee table and let them have at it.
Have a great day!

Hi Donna!
This was fun!
I loved to read the Troll and Scholastic flyers too! I can see that you and I are both book addicts!
:-))

My kids loved all the "Scary Stories" books too!

Now I'm enjoying buying board books for my grandson to be!

Oh, I developed my love of reading as a young girl. Nancy Drew stands out most in my mind. I practically lived at the library!

Donna; Wow so many books! I love them. How great that you kept them. All the moving we did when ours were little most were lost. I have no small ones to read too any more, unless you count my hubby; lol

Donna,
How sweet that is...many of those books look familiar! My daughter is 22, but we still kept a bunch of those Halloween books! I love Will Moses and I didn't know about that book...I'll have to check it out, especially since The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is my favorite. I just love that Disney cartoon that's narrated by Bing Crosby! And of course the Johnny Depp version, which we can't watch at night, only during the day! Have fun reading! (hopefully with a cup of hot tea and a kitty in your lap)
Hugs,
Victoria Lynn

Great selection! I remember reading my first Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark in 4th grade. I remembered being scared I was going to get locked in a trunk on my wedding day and that a creature was going to attack my feet at the end of the bed. (Two of the stories from those books) So funny now, but back then I was really scared!

I used to love to get the Schoolastic Book pamphlet to bring home (yes, they've been around that long). I'd bring it to my mother with about checkmarks on about 3/4 of the books. Mother would narrow my list down and order a few books. Your posting brought back some very fond memories for me. laurie (bargainhunr)

This is a fabulous collection. Your little ones must have had a wonderful time with so many excellent books. And the illustrations are true art. These are timeless. A real treasure.

What a terrific post, you know I love books, too. I have a few from my childhood, and just recently began buying them at garage sales and second hand stores so my little visitors will have something to look forward to when they visit. I'm even giving the children's "section" a space on the lowest shelf so the little hands can pick their own books!

You really have a great selection of children's books. I have two. One was my little girl's fav and I think I knew it by heart. The other came along later in my life, it's called "The Ghost Who Was Afraid of the Dark". He looks like Casper, the friendly ghost. It's cute and I love it. Enjoyed looking at all of yours.
