I snapped these photos about 3 weeks ago. Chip was visiting up on the deck and thought the top of the fountain would be a good place to hang out until I tossed him some peanuts.
Chip, you brightened my summer days with your funny antics and your peanut-stuffed cheeks.
My sweet little friend met his end this afternoon at the claws and fangs of the well fed house cat who lives next door, and who has taken to laying in wait in our backyard. He has also caught and killed at least a half dozen birds that I know of in the short time that he has lived next door.
My little Chip, you will be missed more than you can imagine.

That is so sad!! I'm very sorry.
Oh, poor Chip. Aren't you so glad you showered him with peanuts while he was with you?
I am a cat rescuer & advocate. If that cat lived next door to me, a humane trap would have been set the first time he caught one of my wildlife friends... in a spot where the neighbor could not see it. After I caught him, he would have been taken to the local humane society or cat rescue... and when the neighbor asked me if I had seen her cat, I would have denied any knowledge.
Cats do NOT belong loose outside. They are not a part of the wildlife food chain nor are they a part of the wildlife "family". A cat can wipe out a whole colony of birds or chipmunks or squirrels within a day or two.
Nope, your neighbor's cat would not have been loose long enough to get my chipmunk friend!! You'd better either buy or borrow a humane trap, Donna. Set it with some tuna inside & when you capture the cat, cover the cage with a sheet or blanket & don't let your neighbor see you load it into your car... and off you go to the shelter or rescue.
Problem solved.
I'm so sorry for your sweet chipmunk friend. That's so unfair!
Sincerely~ Andrea

Oh how sad! That is part of the reason I keep my cats in the house!
Oh, so sorry to hear about Chip. I looked forward to reading about him.

How horrible. I'm so sorry. Rest in peace dear Chip.
I am so sorry to hear about Chip. I love cats, but that is one of the things they do.
Oh, no! I have a little chippy here and I know how much joy they can bring. Why don't cats have to be on a leash...like dogs? I've had cats and we kept them in the house or on a leash when outside. My love of all the birds and creatures in my yard was the reason for that.I'm so sorry.

Oh Donna, that is so sad. I'm so sorry. That darned cat!
Take care,

Oh no. Oh, Donna, how heartbreaking this is. Damn those cats. They should be inside, not outside, and I get really angry at cat owners who let their cats roam. It's unforgivable.
I'm so so sorry my friend. Sending you love.

I am so sad to hear this! I loved that little guy! And I know how he endeared by both you and your dad. I am believer that cats should not be allowed to roam. Most communities have animal ordinances that prohibit domestic animals to wander outside of the confines of their yard. The wild birds you feed could also be in jeopardy. I hope you can approach your neighbors and they see the light of day about the issue.
