"About the time we first hear the Robin's ringing welcome to spring we may listen for the Bluebird's more gentle greeting. No bird's song is more associated with the return of Spring than the Bluebird's."
(Frank M. Chapman, Birdlife, 1897)
I've never actually seen a bluebird in our neck of the woods. Do they visit tiny suburban lots smack dab in the middle of neighborhoods? If they do, we've never been graced with their presence.
I have a variety of bird statues throughout the house but, to me, the queen of the cottage is the bluebird.
I love this old gravy boat. Yes, the gold is chipped with age... even worn off completely in some areas...
And yes, there is a significant chip at the end of the gravy boat...
All the more reason to love it...
Bluebirds = the promise of spring. What a lovely thought after such a long winter!
Right now we're being soaked with torrential downpours over the past several days, a "Nor'easter" of rain and high winds... But the robins are everywhere, loving the warmer weather and all the worms that the rain brings to the surface!
Happy spring!
Donna
so lovely! I saw my first bluebird when we purchased our weekend cabin. they require a certain typ house and an open field or yard!
ReplyDeleteSpring will come
ReplyDeletePlease come over for my spring giveaway if you would like to
Happy spring to you too! I love, love, love the gravy boat. And I agree with you, the bluebird is the queen of the cottage. Thanks for sharing such a lovely post.

Hi Donna,
ReplyDeleteI love bluebirds! I remember a childrens movie when I was a child, about the bluebird of happiness, and since then I have always been on the lookout :-) We don't have them in our neighborhood either, but I have spied a couple in the mountains.
The Gravy boat is Awesome!

So pretty! I love bluebirds, too! Donna, I'm not sure if bluebirds are in your area or not but if they are- build (or buy) a bluebird house and they will come! Ours stay in our yard all year long! ♥
ReplyDeleteyour gravy boat is just lovely, xo MARY
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this beautiful gravy bowl. I would have snatched that up in a second, chips or not. Saddly, real bluebirds like open fields. Most people living on a small lot among other house probably won't see them in their yards. Plus they don't come to feeders, they like live food. BUT Anything's possible!! I hope they forget about their preferences and come to visit you.
ReplyDeleteStay dry!
Patricia :o)
I love your sweet bluebirds! The gravy boat is so charming and the chips make it even better! We don't have bluebirds here, either. I can't remember the last time I saw a bluebird.

Hello Donna...Hope the bluebird of happiness visits you soon. Sincerely, Susan
ReplyDeleteBluebirds are such beautiful creatures, but very delicate. They raise 3 sets of babies each summer. One year a mockingbird killed every baby in the nest at my parents house. My sweet daddy, sat out in the swing with a BB Gun and protected the babies that came later in the year. I couldn't believe he'd shoot any creature, but he felt obliged to protect those birds.
ReplyDeleteWhat a JOY it would be to see BLUEBIRDS ...but here in Southeast Texas...I have never seen one.
ReplyDeleteBut we too are getting our spring Robins...and am so happy the nicer weather is here and the tree's are budding out. It's been a LONG winter here in this part of Texas too...we have had much colder temps this winter than we have had in all the years we have lived down here.
COME SWEET SPRING !!!
Rose
I didn't think we had blue birds here either but I was over at my friends house the other day and saw a male and female blue bird. They were so cute. They kept going to her door and pecking at her door mat that was one of those natural kind of mats. They would peck off a bunch, then gather it up and then fly off to build their nest. We watched them for about 1/2 hour.
ReplyDeleteI love your blue birds!
Hugs,
Joanne
Darling gravy boat. I like the worn look too and the bluebirds are so sweet.
ReplyDeleteHope you are not under water. Sun tomorrow, woohoo!
We get bluebirds here at our house, as as gorgeous as they are, I decided I didn't like them very much, my DH and I were home and we heard this commotion outside, we looked out and this beautiful bluebird was attacking one of the other birds. Then we were told that they are aggressive birds and are bullies. Not nice. But we saw a cardinal yesterday for the first time here. Spring is coming!!!!

ReplyDeleteI adore bluebirds! Love your pretty dishes!

They come every year to my little spot of a garden home across the street from a two-story bank! Put the right houses in for them, and they will often grace you with their beautiful presence.

I love blue birds. We always put out a lot of houses for them. One year they built a nest in the house by the carport. It was so interesting watching them. I have seen them at the feeders this year which is a little strange, but I guess they needed the extra energy. I have a plate with the same design as your gravy boat. I came across it by accident, hubby was using it for something! Needless to say I "swooped" it up and brought it inside!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely pattern! Adorable! And I had to smile when I saw your new header, with little white vases and pink tulips all lined up.
ReplyDeleteThis are just so precious. I love birds on dishes.
