For the love of blue birds...

I picked up this bluebird music box statue at a thrift store about six years ago because,
after all...

... who doesn't love bluebirds?

A few years later this bluebird gravy boat came home with me because, again,
how could I resist the bluebirds?

I own this video of Shirley Temple in The Blue Bird.
I love Shirley Temple. And bluebirds.

And this little green 'bluebird house' storage box came home with me from a thrifting expedition a few years ago because... Well, I think by now you know why.

So now that I have this little guy and his friends visiting my very own back yard on a regular basis (for the first time ever!)...

... I've made sure I have all the necessities on hand to entice them to stay such as
Insect Suet and Mealworm Suet and freeze dried mealworms...

... and fresh water (in a heated birdbath as it's often still below freezing here in New England!)...

... and we put up one bluebird house in the back yard
(it's the birdhouse that is new wood and hasn't weathered yet)...

... and another in the side yard, both placed 6-8' high because my research said
that that's the height bluebirds like!

Yes, I'm doing all I can to keep these beautiful little blue birds as regular visitors...

... because it's been THE most amazing experience having them visit us on a daily basis -
a once in a lifetime experience!
(or at the very least, a once in 33 years experience since that's how long
we've lived in this house without ever seeing a single one!)

So are we tweaking our yard to make them feel welcome?

You betcha!

I'm joining Brenda at Cozy Little House for Tweak It Tuesday
and Cindy at My Romantic Home for Show & Tell Friday.

Have a wonderful week, everyone!

Donna

  4. I am as joy-filled as you are, Donna, that your beloved blue birds are coming to pay you special visits this spring. They must sense you need them this year, for reasons perhaps only known to them. :)

    Enjoy!!

    Love~ Andrea

  8. Good Morning Donna! I hope you and your bluebirds are staying warm and that you didn't get hit with this latest round of snow!
I just love your little bluebirds and I understand how exciting it is to have them all of a sudden in your life. I am doing everything I can to entice Sammy to visit our yard regularly -- and it is so much fun! I had a BIG crow in the backyard yesterday trying to steal peanuts -- but even crows can be fun to watch!

  10. It really is awesome that you've researched to make your yard bluebird friendly! It's now like a luxury resort for them! I'm so happy that you're enjoying their presence so much. I hope they turn into permanent residents...

  14. Awwwww, Donna. Loved seeing all your bluebirds, both living and not.

Can you send a few over our way? Tell them they have lots of delicious seeds and fresh water from my birdbath heater! Thanks! Susan

  16. Hopped over from Amaraland. I live in Southern IN and begin to watch bluebirds both at home and at school when I realized they were in such decline in the area.
I've enjoyed showing my gramerlings and students the nests, eggs and babies and watching for the returning birds to our bluebird trail. Love your pictures.

  17. What pretty little bluebirds - porcelain and real. Can you believe I've never seen a real bluebird. Those visiting you are so beautiful. I'd want to keep them around too.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia;)

  18. Bluebird houses need to be 4-6 feet above the ground. They also need to be in an open area, such as a field or golf course. Your boxes will attract other birds because of the trees around your yard.

  19. So sweet! I have only seen them on occasion. Each time they took away my breath with their beauty and rarity. It pays to make their environment inviting as you have. I am so happy you are now surrounded both inside AND out!
