Impatiens, my "go-to" flower

Impatiens is the flower of choice in the planters and window boxes of this brown-thumbed gardener.

They ask for nothing but water.

They need no pruning...

... no fertilizer...

... no dead heading.

They cheerfully greet each new day...

...with an abundance...

... of colorful blossoms.

Sweet impatiens...

... you will forever be my flower of choice...

I'm so happy that you are thriving.

You were hard to find at the garden centers this year...

Hopefully the disease you were prone to...

... will be a thing of the past by next summer.

I can't even imagine a summer...

 .. without you.

The high temps and high humidity have fled New England for a spell, leaving us with gloriously beautiful weather! If the temperatures stayed like this, I'd love to have summer year 'round!

I'm joining Tracie's Cottage Garden Party at Fishtail Cottage this week.
Have a great week, everyone!

Winterizing, honeysuckle, window boxes & Baby Cat

This is our typical winterizing process...

...which became a top priority last weekend with the threat of Hurricane Sandy.

Each year the furniture, planters, garden statues, etc. get arranged like an interlocking puzzle in the center of the patio.

Everything is then covered with a heavy duty tarp and weighted down by rocks from around the perimeter of the patio. The tarp is also staked into the ground in the front.

Do you have any idea how much I wish this was still the view? Winters and I don't care too much for each other.

And it's going to be a looooooong time before the backyard looks like this again. This is the birdhouse that was taken down off its pole last weekend, the one you saw in my last post where Baby cat made herself at home inside of it.

I forgot to share these short little videos that I took that day....

... so here they are!

Did you see the honeysuckle vine in the first birdhouse photo above, growing on the obelisk right next to the swingset deck?

It is actually still budding and blooming in a few random spots! I've decided that next spring I'm going to plant one at each of the front legs of the swingset so it grows up and then across the monkey bars. I'm already envisioning sitting there on summer evenings watching the hummingbirds flock to it! Our hummers have been gone for over a month now. How I miss them...

The honeysuckle also has these little berries which must be what is attracting the birds lately. Another plus!

And speaking of the hummingbirds, the nasturtium that I grew from seed started to bloom profusely at the end of September (sadly, it was after the hummers had headed south). Amazingly, it's still blooming.

Next year I'm buying plants rather than starting them from seed. Our growing season just isn't long enough. I'd love for them to be in bloom while the hummers are still here to enjoy them.

Elsewhere in the yard there are leaves, leaves, and more leaves.
(Photo with watercolor filter)

Almost all of the leaves have fallen now...
(photo with dry brush filter)

I don't think this fall was quite as spectacular as some we've had in years past...

... perhaps in part because we lost so many of our foliage trees in last year's freak October snowstorm.

The Bacopa is still blooming in the shed's window boxes, albeit under a canopy of fallen oak leaves.

Most of the trees in our side yard are pin oaks. Their leaves go from green to brown, and many hang on the trees until spring, when new leaf growth then forces them to fall to the ground.

So there is always an abundance of raking to be done in the fall and the spring around our little yard.

Look at the size difference between our brown oak leaves and one of our yellow tulip tree leaves!
Yes, lots and lots of raking...

Don't forget to turn your clocks back this weekend!

Stop by and share something you've been tweaking!

What's black & white and adorable all over?

If you've ever read my blog, you've probably figured out that it's our Baby cat. It's been a while since I posted any of her antics, so here goes!

When I came out into the kitchen the other morning, Baby was sitting in the family room on the rug, soaking up the sun on her back. I told her to stay right there while I ran to get my camera. Here's a first - she listened to me!

She's hung out on that spot all day, long after the sun was gone!

She loves to keep me company in my little office/studio. She was watching while I was painting my latest piece, but then she started nodding off. I hope this insecure artist (me) isn't reading too much into that!

Another time I was filing paid bills, left the room for a minute to get something, and came back to find her curled up in the last section of the file folder!

I had the top drawer of this bureau open a tad. I keep some of my smaller prints in the drawers and was filling an order. Lo and behold, when I returned someone had squeezed her way into the drawer! This photo is cropped VERY closely to try to hide the mess on top of the bureau (which is actually my girls' old changing table from when they were babies!). I didn't really succeed in hiding the mess, but had to share the pic of Baby anyhow!

This was her in May, right after I plunked down my lavender and impatiens on the window screen feeder.

And this is her last night!

I had Chipmunks (looking for handouts) running around me on the deck while I was taking these photos, so I'm sure that's what caught her attention here.

Sorry, Baby. You are an indoor kitty.

So that's the Baby photos for today.
Oh, and Amanda, our oldest was on vacation in Switzerland, Italy, and Germany back in April. Someone saw Baby's picture and told her that Baby is definitely a Norwegian Forest Cat. I'd never even heard of a Norwegian Forest Cat! I looked them up on-line and, you know, and she just may be! She has "the look" and tons of their traits! And all this time we thought we just had a regular old shelter kitty. Who knew?

We're in for HOT and HUMID this week. We have been blessed with amazingly gorgeous weather this June, at least for me since I don't like extreme heat.

Enjoy the week, everyone!

How much is that kitty in the window...

Baby, our little indoor kitty...

...loves to watch the world go by from the windows of our little 'cottage.'

After all, there are so many little critters and birds to watch...

While filling birdbaths out in the garden, I heard her meowing. Luckily I had my camera with me. She looked so cute sitting in the window.

These photos were taken about a month ago, right after I plunked some 6 packs of impatiens and vinca vine down on the birds' screen feeder outside the dining room window.

This photo was taken just a few days ago. The impatiens and vinca vine are growing nicely, and Baby has moved to the downstairs window to watch the world go by...

 No matter where she looks...

.. there is always something to watch...

Even if it's just me!

I'll toss some peanuts out in a minute, Baby. That should get you some immediate chipmunk, squirrel, and blue jay action!

I'm linking up to Cindy's My Romantic Home Show & Tell Friday.

Happy 4th of July, everyone!
