All Hallows' Eve...

We are ready for all the little goblins, witches, and ghosts that will be stopping by for treats tomorrow night!

Image may contain: 2 people
Most of the Halloween decorations in the yard have been around since our own girls were little trick-or-treaters themselves! I love this 1990 photo of them dressed as little Dutch girls!

But back to the yard decorations. There's old Mr. Jack-O-Lantern, the windsock...

...and his friend, Mr. Ghost, also a windsock.

Witchy-Poo is a more recent addition. She's probably been making an appearance for the past 6-8 years or so. She likes to hang out on the backyard gate.

Mr. Scarecrow has definitely seen better days. He's very faded and his coat is quite tattered.

But I love him just the same so he's not going anywhere.

The old black cat & pumpkin flag is still blowing in the wind.

And although it's not a Halloween decoration, I found this adorable red birdhouse in a local thrift store and couldn't resist it!

The backyard doesn't get decorated too much other than pumpkins in the flower boxes on the shed.

I had to trim back the sweet potato vine to make room for the pumpkins. It grows like crazy!

I'll be back in a day or two to post about the giveaway for this awesome pair of hand-shaped earrings designed by my daughter Amanda, one of only 50 'limited edition' pairs that were created!

Wishing you all a safe and Happy Halloween!
See you in a day or two!

Getting ready for Halloween!

For the past two years I'd fully intended to participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project and put out a teal pumpkin so trick-or-treaters with food allergies would know that we also have non-food goodies to hand out...

...but I've always forgotten to get the teal pumpkin and non-candy treats - until this year!
I picked up a paper mache pumpkin from A.C. Moore, some "Mermaid Teal" paint and voila!

So from now on it will be our annual Halloween tradition to provide candy as well as some fun little non-food treats for whoever comes knocking on our door!

If you enter your zip code into the following Teal Pumpkin map site, it will let you know of any houses that have registered in your area. And may more homes may also be participating but just don't know that they can register on this site.

Also, early next week I'll be back to host a give-away for a pair of these awesome limited edition earrings (only 50 pairs were created!), designed by my daughter and created by RaHa Jewelry. I bought a pair and love them - they're so lightweight that you don't even know you're wearing them! If you'd like to enter to win a pair, either for yourself of for a very unique gift for someone special (the holiday gift-giving season is almost upon us!), then stop back next week! You can also purchase a pair outright if you just can't wait to see if you win! They're available in Amanda's Etsy Shop:

See you all next week!

October 31st...

Happy Halloween...

... from our house to yours.

I'm not quite sure where the summer went.
(the same view taken 5 months ago)

We had some pretty strong winds a few weeks ago. Luckily no trees came down.
It appears we'll have a decent night for the trick-or-treaters this year.

Enjoy your All Hallow's Eve!

Embracing Halloween minimalism...

We're embracing a minimalist attitude when it comes to Halloween decor this year.

Other than some beautiful gourds and a huge white pumpkin from a wonderful Internet friend (thank you, Kathie!), the only other decorations I've put out are my two vintage black cats (who actually sit out year-round);.but when paired with pumpkins and gourds, they definitely up the Halloween aura.

The black chalkware cat and Baby look eerily similar as they stand guard over the gourds.

Pete (my Lefton parakeet) has kindly allowed me to use his cage to display some of the gourds.

Doesn't Baby look positively heavenly in this photo, with rays of sunlight streaming in around her?

The only problem with this display is that there's no room for Baby on top of the chest or in the window...

... so I decided to rearrange things a bit to make more room for Baby. After all, this area is one of her favorite places to lounge.

I moved the large white pumpkin, some gourds, and the cast iron black cat...

... to the end table in the living room.

And the chalkware cat and bird cage were moved to the top of the recycling center.

Okay, Baby, the top of the chest is all cleared off and ready for you!
(Not that she is spoiled or anything :)

Pop over and join the fun!

Happy Halloweeeeeeen!

From our house to yours...

Happy Halloween!!!

Baby...

...Tiger

... and Mr. J got into the spirit thanks to PicMonkey!

But today, with no help from PicMonkey, Baby got into costume...

I bought her the little witch hat at AC Moore last month...

And Court bought her a cute little Jack O Lantern shirt.

As you can see from this little video, she is the most mellow cat when it comes to being dressed up!

She doesn't mind wearing her hat or shirt in the least.

However, she did jump down to look for her witch hat when it fell off!

I hope you all have a safe and Happy Halloween!!!!

This week I'm joining Vintage on a Dime for Welcome Home Wednesday and
Show & Tell Friday at My Romantic Home!

Favorite Halloween memories...

Halloween has always been a favorite time of year for us...

... so needless to say, there's been a lot of tweaking going on around the yard
so we'll be ready when all the little trick-or-treaters come calling!

It seems like just yesterday that we were taking our own girls trick-or-treating, but in reality
it's been many, many years as they're now in their twenties!
(I'm still not sure where those years went!)
Part of the Halloween fun was making the girls' costumes each year.

Back in the early 90's they were little Dutch girls. The costumes were pretty easy to make;
little calico skirts with elastic waistbands, cafe curtain aprons (which I then then stenciled with windmills), cardigans and tights that they already had. The tricky part was the little Dutch girl hats, but with the help of some florist wire I was able to get the side flaps to bend upwards!

Another year they were little Indian maidens after their dad brought these headdresses back
from a trip to Colorado. Again, very simple homemade "over the head" faux suede dresses
(i.e. no zippers or buttons for this bumbling seamstress).

These were the easiest costumes ever! Black pants that they already had, some of my old blouses, scarves, and necklaces from the 80's, an inexpensive eye patch and voila - instant pirates!

A footed sleeper, headband ears, and heart on her nose
transformed Amanda into a Care Bear one year...

...while a homemade cape, crazy socks, painted whiskers and cat ears
transformed Court into the snazziest Halloween cat ever.

Most of the yard decorations that I put out a couple of weeks ago are the same ones we've had since the girls were little, like the pumpkin windsock in the first photo and this ghost windsock. Both have seen better days, but I still hang them year after year.

I still have the blue & yellow "black cat" flag the girls are standing next to in their pirate costume photo, but I've been hanging this one for many years now.

This pumpkin scarecrow came along when the girls were a little older. He gets
tied to the maple tree so he can greet all the trick-or-treaters coming up the walkway.
The whiskey barrel in the front yard always gets a 'bouquet' of
faux fall leaves at this time of year...

...as do the flower pots on the front stoop.

Another scarecrow stands guard at the back gate.
The ivy growing up the fireplace is brilliant orange right now.

Mr. Hairy Tarantula hopes that you and yours have a very fun and safe Halloween!!
And you moms & dads who have little ones - enjoy these years because, trust me,
they fly by all too quickly!

Thank you PicMonkey for helping me alter these regular photos into
spook-tacular Halloween photos!!

Be sure to pop over and share one of your favorite things/people/pets/holidays/recipes, or things you've been tweaking around your home or yard!

Happy Halloween, everyone!!!!

Donna

P.S. To all my east coast friends who have mentioned Sandy in their comments, I hear you! If we have electricity, I plan to share a "one year anniversary" post with some photos of our yard after last year's freak snowstorm. We lost so many trees and branches. I'm definitely not looking forward to a repeat performance exactly one year later!
