How to attract birds and wildlife during the winter months...

... especially if you live in a region that has been covered with snow and ice
the entire winter like we have been here in New England!
Invest in a heated bird bath!

Our newest visitors, ....

... the gorgeous flock of bluebirds....

...that have taken up residence...

.. in our yard, ...

... are thoroughly enjoying this never ending supply of fresh (unfrozen) water.

Of course that's nothing new to our regulars who visit many times a day
throughout the harsh winter months. Mr. Blue Jay is a constant visitor to the bath.

Mrs. Cardinal, who had just finished her water...

... and Mr. Cardinal who was headed to the bird bath...

... when I spotted him.

You'll have to trust me that this was a flock of starlings visiting the bird bath the other day.
I have no idea what happened to this photo to make it so blurry!

The sweet mourning doves are always visiting.
Here's one waiting patiently for Mr. Bluebird to finish drinking.

Always gentle and patient, it now waits for a starling to finish...

... but it looks like it might take a while as Mr. Starling has decided to take a full bath.

Finally her patience pays off and it is her turn at the bath.

There's often a line at the bird bath, with someone waiting to take their turn
as soon as the bird bath frees up.

My little Sammy's don't understand why it isn't called a heated squirrel bath...

.. because they visit just as often as the birds.

Now it doesn't hurt to offer the birds and wildlife a bit of food as well as fresh water, especially during these harsh New England winters. Here you see one Sammy drinking, the one to the left heading to the suet feeder hanging from the deck and yet another Sammy hanging upside down at the suet feeder hanging from the cherry tree.

In addition to hanging suet, we also have a screen feeder attached to our dining room window that we keep filled with seed and such during the winter months. Here's a little tufted titmouse visiting the feeder while Mr. Bluebird, who'd just finished drinking at the birdbath, is contemplating joining Mr. TT.

And when the harsh New England winters come to an end and food becomes more plentiful for my furry and feathered friends...

The screen feeder becomes a little window box, with flats of flowers sitting
where the seed was once scattered.

Oh, what a welcome sight this will be after the winter we've had!
Can spring and summer truly be just around the corner?

And speaking of summer, although I don't put out as much food in the warmer months as I do during our frigid winters, I provide even more fresh water for my garden friends with multiple bird baths placed around the yard. It's essential that all living creatures have access to water, which is sometimes hard to come by during our oppressive, hot summer months, so they really appreciate a fresh supply of water.

Here's a mourning dove perched on a small hanging bird bath. Quite unusual because the doves usually visit the larger baths down on the ground, like the one you see behind my bunny planter.

I even caught these young siblings a few years ago playing and drinking from the fountain on our deck one warm summer night.

The animals truly are grateful for the extra help during the long cold winter months, as evidenced by Sammy giving thanks before digging into his meal of fresh suet, seed, and corn. They give me so much more, just with their presence, than I could ever hope to give them.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

Warning - I'm going to be BORING you with more bluebird photos in the very near future! As I said, we've lived here for 33 years and have never seen a bluebird in the yard before, so the flock that has been hanging around since early March is the most unexpected delight!

Till next time,
Donna

The Bluebird(s) of Happiness!

Be still my heart!
(photo altered using Dry Brush filter)
Look what is sitting on my deck railing!

I'd never even seen a bluebird in my entire life until last year during a walk in the cemetery.

And now these little beauties are gracing our backyard with their presence!
For the first time - ever!
And we've been in our house going on 34 years!

The suet is a big draw!

The males outnumber the females big time.

As a matter of fact, I've really only seen one female, but I've seen anywhere from 2 to 3 and even up to 7 or more males at one time.

I'm really hoping these gorgeous little birds stay around, so I ordered a couple of bluebird houses online.

Hopefully they'll arrive soon and some of these little ones will take up residence in our yard.

We've been running a good 20 degrees below the average temps for this time of year, so I know it's been hard for the birds that have arrived already.

Hopefully the seed, suet, and heated birdbath water will keep them going until the weather warms up a bit.

And my other 'blue' birds, the jays, are thriving on their supply of peanuts and fresh water.
I love the one on the right coming in for a landing!

I'm really looking forward to setting the clocks ahead this weekend and gaining another hour of daylight at day's end! I know it stinks that the mornings will be darker longer, but the days seem longer when it stays light later, so I'm anxious to make the change.

I'm joining Cindy at My Romantic Home for Show & Tell Friday this week.

Have a great week, everyone!

Baby, it's cold outside!

This is the view outside my window mere minutes ago.
According to the noontime news, we're in for yet another snowstorm.

"Say, what????"
"Sorry, Sammy!" I guess he hadn't heard that news until I just announced it.

Lucky for him, the feeder is filled with an assortment of bird seed.

Chow down now, Sammy. It's going to be COLD tonight.

Of course after eating, it's always good to wash food down with a nice drink.
Unfortunately our heated birdbath got unplugged by accident yesterday. We plugged it back in this afternoon and topped it off with warm water until the frozen part thaws, so thankfully Sammy was able to drink to his heart's content.

It looks like someone else dropped in for a drink...

He's coming closer, Sammy! I think you'd better finish up and give Mr. Blue Jay his turn!

And speaking of Blue Jays, they are most definitely enjoying the feeder as well.
As are the Juncos (you see one in the background),
who love all the seed that gets tossed to the ground.

Looks like a little squabble might be brewing over who's hogging the seed.
(Not that I claim to be an expert on blue jay body language. Just saying).

Here's a little "simulated snow" as this iswhat it will look like in about an hour.

I took this photo of Mrs. Cardinal several days ago, just before our weekend storm arrived.
(As you can see, we didn't get all of our leaves raked up before the snows came.)

I have to say, the birds and Sammy squirrels really enjoy the heated bird bath on these COLD winter days. My old heated bird bath stopped working toward the end of last winter, so I made sure to buy a new one before the freezing temperatures arrived this winter.

And here's the view inside right now
(as reflected in the antique wavy-glass mirror),
where we're very blessed to be while the snows fall outside our front door.

Stay safe and warm wherever you are!

A study in blue jays

Not really. I just couldn't think of a better title.

This photo was taken about a month ago, when the babies were everywhere! They've always got their little beaks open and their feathers ruffled it seems. And goodness, do they squawk for mommy & daddy to bring them some food!

...which is what this little fellow was doing. I think mom & dad were practicing tough love, though, and sending him off to search for some food on his own.

Here's a mom or dad visiting the deck.

These were taken much more recently, during our heat wave a week or so ago, which is why this fellow's beak was open even though he wasn't waiting for someone to magically drop food into it like the first little guy.

Birds actually pant when it's quite hot out.

Oops, it looks like I've been spotted.

Of course the other thing they do when they're hot is visit one of the many birdbaths in the yard.

And it never hurts to find the tallest perch to try to catch some sort of breeze! I'm so glad we got this birdhouse put back together because it is a favorite place for the birds to survey the yard for peanuts, bugs, moths, you name it.

Stay cool, everyone! We're in for a run of hot weather here in New England!
