Tackling projects long overdue and eating better...

The little recycling center that sits next to the fridge in our kitchen was l-o-n-g overdue for a reorganization and cleaning.

I have a constant tug-of-war going on inside my brain. My desire to be a minimalist and my need to hang onto anything that has a memory (or is cute) are always on a collision course. I do not need one single thing on this shelf. I don't use anything up here. But since I haven't totally embraced minimalism, instead of letting everything go, I just gave it a good cleaning.

The canister set is one thing I won't part with (the other canisters are nested inside this large one). This set belonged to my mom. Also, the green tree. That was made by my oldest daughter, and I love it, so I certainly can't let that go. (That gives you a good idea of how my inner dialogue works)...

I at least got the shelves and baskets organized so I can find things easily. But look at all the crap still on those shelves! Clearly a project that was long overdue, but that still needs a lot of tweaking! (There's cute Mr. J, getting a drink from his water bowl).

Of course after all that organizing, I ended up with piles spread all over the living room - the 'stuff' that had been shoved into/onto the shelves of the recycling center. I'm happy to report that it all got organized, tossed, or recycled, etc., so the piles are now gone!

As I do every January (and this year is no exception), along with trying to tackle all the little house projects that have long been avoided/neglected/overlooked/ignored (any one of those words will do), I also make a promise to myself to try to eat healthier. (We'll see how long it lasts.)

I found a recipe on Weight Watchers for Turkey Sweet Potato Shepherds Pie.

It looked simple enough for even me (I am neither an adventuresome or good cook).

Okay, vegetables and turkey sausage sauteed  and cooked, sweet potatoes cooked and mashed......

Tomato soup then added and cooked to thicken. Turkey/vegetable mixture poured into pie dish...

Mashed sweet potato topping added. Then, into the oven...

... and a short time later, yummy Shepherd's Pie.

That plus a tossed salad made for a nice dinner on this cold winter night.

PHOTO PROBLEM SOLVED

Regarding yesterday's post, where I was having problems being able to load photos. I'm STILL not able to put up a new post with photos using Internet Explorer, so I tried using Mozilla Foxfire. As you can see, I was able to add photos to this this post without a problem. I've been having a lot of intermittent Internet Explorer problems lately. I use USPS.com to print labels for all our Etsy orders, and about a month or two ago I was no longer able to print my shipping labels using Internet Explorer. Once again, I started using Mozilla Foxfire to print my labels and haven't had a single problem.

I know several of you also had problems or heard of others having problems with pictures on Blogger yesterday. So it seems there is some glitch with Internet Explorer working with Blogger, at least on my end.

I'd encourage anyone else who's having problems to download Mozilla Foxfire and try using that. It might solve your photo/posting problems!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

A palette of green and peachy-pink...

It was time to give the top of our little recycling center a little pizzazzzzz...

...for the spring.

It's a nice change from winter's white-on-white cat and battenburg lace runner.

The white cat hasn't gone far though. He now sits on the floor next to the recycling center.

I love the cover of this old 1913 Bobbsey Twins book. When I was a young, I could always count on a new BT book being under the tree each Christmas.

Although this one is titled The Bobbsey Twins at Snow Lodge, the illustration on the front cover is very spring-like.

I also added a few bells from my small collection. My favorite is the Carmel Junipero Serra Mission bell with the cross handle.

Once upon a time, little vases filled with creamy white buttons sat on the recycling center. That was BB (before Baby). I shudder to think of the mess she could make with  hundreds upon hundreds of buttons scattered all over the floor...

I hope you are all enjoying Spring wherever you are. I'm loving the warmer temperatures we've been having! (Although this evening's weather forecast just predicted FROST for overnight and cold temperatures tomorrow... hardly spring-like, but at least it's not snow!!)

I'm linking to Show & Tell Friday at Cindy's My Romantic Home. Cindy posted a touching tribute to her mom this week, so be sure to stop by and visit her and all the other bloggers sharing something this week.

White on white on white....

...against white.

I can't decide if the abundance of white in our home is because I am afraid of color...

...or because I love the simplicity of various shades of white. I suspect it is a bit of both.

A perfect example is the white ceramic cat on a white battenburg runner on a white recycling center against a white beadboard panelled wall....

... with a white applique on the recycling center, of course!

Wouldn't all of this white look striking against a robin's egg blue wall? Or what if the wall stayed white, but I painted the recycling center my favorite shade of peachy-pink! Oh dear... just trying to decide between those those two options is making my head spin, which is probably why everything always stays white!

I'm linking up to Faded Charm for White Wednesday this week. Be sure to pop over and see all the bloggers sharing their White Wednesday posts!

Small cottage recycling center...

In honor of Earth Day... my recycling center...

I wish I had remembered to take a photo of this piece before painting it, but I didn't... So in order to show a 'before' photo, I had to crop it out of pictures where it appeared in the background, which makes for a very small photo that shows no detail. But that's okay because there really isn't a lot of detail in this little piece anyhow...

It's a small recycling center that I picked up at a craft show a few years ago. The front panel pulls down and there's a trash barrel inside. Even though the piece itself is small, the transition was quite dramatic. It was a very prim hunter green when I bought it, which looked great when the house was full of darker, primitive styled pieces.

Needless to say, when I decided to make our home 'lighter and brighter,' this piece got a makeover... It went from prim to cottage in no time thanks to a flower basket applique, creamy white paint, and a little glass knob...

A little FYI... I have no idea why I decided to look this up, but according to "Google Translate," the French translation for "small cottage recycling center" is Petit chalet centre de recyclage... in Spanish it's Pequeña cabaña centro de reciclaje... and in Dutch it's Kleine cottage recycling Center, which easily makes Dutch my top choice should I decide to learn a new language as I already know three out of the four words!!

Happy recycling!
(which ...can you believe this?... happy recycling is also the same in Dutch as it is in English according to Google Translate! At this rate, I'll be speaking Dutch fluently by mid-week!)
