The Masters of Classical Music

I've been lucky enough to be in the right place (thrift stores) at the right time (three different occasions), resulting in this eclectic collection of composers.

Mozart is a plaster type bust, very rustic and chippy.

As a matter of fact, he's missing a bit of his nose as you can see in this photo. I think it just adds to his charm. Vintage imperfections always seem to have a positve, rather than negative, impact on me.

Mozart usually spends his days on the fireplace mantel, but I thought I'd try him out in the bookcase for a while.

Beethoven, on the other hand, is made of a resin type material.

Like Mozart, he's usually on the fireplace mantel, but I rather like the way he looks in the bookcases.

I must admit, though, Beethoven looks a bit grumpy in his new location. That being said, he looked grumpy on the mantel as well :)

My newest acquisition is Bach, who is just a small, plastic bust found at a Salvation Army a couple of weeks ago. Plastic or not, he looked quite regal with the late afternoon sun streaming in the other day.

Unlike his counterparts, he has lived on the library shelves since his arrival at the cottage.

A handsome trio, I'd say. Never mind the different materials, sizes, styles, or ages. I think they complement each other nicely.

And of course you know I was not tweaking this all by my lonesome!
Just peer down the hall a bit and you will see that I had a pair of eyes watching my every move whilst rearranging and snapping photos!

This week I'm joining Claudia at Mockingbird Hill Cottage for Favorite Thing Saturday
and Brenda at Cozy Little House for Tweak It Tuesday.

Have a great week, everyone!!

Craigslist Bookcase Score

We were in desperate need of bookcases to house both our own books and the many books in our Etsy shop.

I eventually plan to move my office/studio from the closet-sized 3rd bedroom of our little "split level" cottage into the medium-sized bedroom that belonged to our oldest daughter. The problem is, when she moved out, she left 20+ years of her childhood behind (you know, the stuff she doesn't want to move from apartment to apartment, but the stuff she can't bear to part with!)! And until I can get her back home for several days (weeks! months!) to go through everything, I'm in a state of limbo.

The only possible place to put bookcases until I move into the larger bedroom is along the wall in this small stretch of hallway. It will be tight, but it's temporary ("Famous last words," as my mother used to say.)

Saturday night I went on Craigslist to see what I could find and I scored BIG time!!! I made arrangements with the seller to pick up the bookcases on Sunday. So for the grand total of $30, I got not one, not two, not three.... but seven of these white bookcases!!! I kept five for myself (the other 2 are downstairs) and I gave two to my sister. We spent Sunday afternoon cleaning them (they were pretty grungy, but they sure cleaned up nice!).

This afternoon was spent sorting through books and trying to arrange them in an order that will make them easy to find. I've always loved the look of an entire wall of bookshelves (although not necessarily in a narrow hallway!). I was also able to play around with the clock shelves a bit (they had been holding books before as well).

Of course this morning, before I started loading books onto the shelves, Miss Baby (the proverbial Literary Cat) made herself at home.

It's amazing how cats must investigate and take ownership of anything new
that comes into the house.
(In a cat's eyes, all things belong to cats. English proverb)

It's not an option to a cat. It's mandatory.

Sorry, Baby. Time to move. Mommy's got work to do. Maybe I'll leave a bottom shelf open for you to hang out in.

So loads...

and loads...

and loads...

.. and loads later, I'd made a pretty good dent in it.

I still have another bin or two of books to go through, so you can guess what I'll be up to tomorrow as well!

Have a great week, everyone!

'Twas the Night Before Christmas ... my growing book collection

I absolutely love beautifully illustrated copies of The Night Before Christmas. I wrote about my (extensive) collection in this 2009 blogpost and in this 2008 blogpost.

This past year I added four more delightfully illustrated copies to my collection. Three I happened across at thrift stores, but one I searched for and found on-line.

This weekend we had our first dusting of snow - just enough to make it feel like Christmas truly is right around the corner. That got me in the mood to get the books out.

So Baby and I went into my office, turned on Miracle on 34th Street...

...and went to work photographing them.

(click any photos to enlarge)

This 1991 version is illustrated by Jerry Smath. I am so glad I found it because the artwork is delightful! See for yourself:

Here is the next copy I found:

This copyright 1985 book has a Victorian flair, beautifully illustrated by Scott Gustafson.

Now the next book is the one I searched for (illustrated by Grandma Moses, copyright 1948), because in last year's comments J.G. suggested that if I didn't have this version, I should definitely consider adding it to my collection. She was so right - I love it!

The quaint, folk art style of Grandma Moses suits this story perfectly!

And last, but definitely not least, I came across this gorgeous version, filled with a variety of classic artwork from the late 1800's to the early 1900's.

So those are the newest additions to my collection.

And if you love this Clement C. Moore story and the various artists' renderings as much as I do...
... be sure to check out the links above to my previous posts about my ever-growing "Twas the Night Before Christmas" collection. You never know, you might just find a favorite version that you'll want to track down for yourself!

Comment: Bobbi, send me your email address so I can send you the information you requested regarding pop up books!

My latest junktique journey...

Last week I visited Fairground Antiques in Swanzey, NH (I love that place!). I'll show you what I got in tomorrow's post, but here are some things I didn't buy!

I thought this was the neatest dress... Wouldn't it be perfect as part of a Halloween costume?

This little guy looked like he'd lost his best friend. I would have gladly taken him home, but he was more than I wanted to spend (besides, I was on a mission to find something else)...

This vintage postcard caught my eye... such a peaceful design...

Sweet melodies being played by my daughter...

... on this vintage child's piano.

Well I love the word Enchanted - and I love animals - and you know how I love children's books, but I just couldn't justify the price...

And what a cheerful looking house on the cover of this Little Golden Book....

WARNING... I know some people do not like old dolls or doll 'body parts,' but I couldn't resist photographing them... So if doll parts creep you out, you might want to stop here... (although the next two photos are pretty tame)...

These little ones actually looked very sweet in their basket...

And his little dolly doesn't look too scary....

But - Oh-My-Gosh - look at these!!! Can you say creepy/scary?

I have seen doll's heads displayed, especially at Halloween time, and I think they make the coolest decorations if you're going for a spooky look... (I have to admit I am drawn to them even though I find them a bit scary!)

I'm sure she was very well loved 'once upon a time'...

It's too bad I didn't squeeze these photos into an October post for Halloween!!

Now this little doll has such a sweet face... She doesn't scare me.

But look at that price! That is scary! Or maybe that's a fair price for a doll like this? She does look very old. I guess I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to the value of older dolls/doll parts...
So stop back tomorrow to see what I was searching for - and actually found!!
