What a difference a year makes...

Okay, it's time for the big reveal! I know many of you could have banged out this project in a weekend, but since hubby and I work at a snail's pace, our swingset garden has been a year in the making, or at least a year in the planning!!

But let me tell you, it was worth the wait... It's even better than I had envisioned! Let me show you what a difference a year makes!
Gentlemen, move that Chip!
Summer 2009:

Summer 2009: The girls' old swingset, with so many wonderful memories that I couldn't bear to part with it, was the inspiration for this little garden/sitting area. The swings have been removed, but the sturdy wooden frame was the perfect starting point for this project!

Summer 2010: I just can't believe the difference in the before and after photos! A small deck, some plants, a little bark mulch and voila!

Summer 2009: We planted blue salvia in front of the swingset last year. It was pretty much the first piece of the entire project.

Summer 2010: I think it likes its new home because it came back strong and full this year.

Summer 2009: The grass in this part of the backyard is virtually non-existent...

Summer 2010: The deck and bark mulch took care of the lack of grass in much of this area. Now we're trying to decide whether to put down a ground cover or to reseed the remaining area.

Summer 2009: Another view of the swingset and the steps that lead up to the deck.

Summer 2010: That's better... Much more inviting!

Summer 2009: Last year we planted two climbing hydrangeas, one on each of the back posts of the swingset...

Summer 2010: They are thriving, but they're also s-l-o-w growers!

Summer 2009: We hope that eventually the hydrangeas will climb up the back posts and then travel across the top of the swingset.

Summer 2010: Their foliage is so lush and thick, I think that would be so beautiful!

Summer 2009: View from our patio. We planted this little honeysuckle vine on our homemade obelisk last year.

Summer 2010: The honeysuckle vine has now climbed to the top of the obelisk and the hummingbirds love to split their time between the feeder the the honeysuckle. The swingset deck and the patio both provide wonderful viewing areas!

Summer 2009: Another view of the salvia and honeysuckle vine right after it was planted last year.

Summer 2010: I thought my vintage birdcage planter might look nice placed between the salvia and the honeysuckle. Although this year I got lazy. Instead of real flowers, I just stuck some faux ferns into the cage. I've never used faux anything in the outdoor garden areas before, but I actually think it looks okay (Right, Jill?) (Click here to see my post on making a birdcage planter for your garden).

In addition to the climbing hydgrangeas on the back swingset posts, I planted clematis vines on the two front posts. There are also some pink lilies in front of a little birdbath in the garden. And Ms. Mermaid, who you see sitting on the bottom step, is loving the garden. And she has already made a very special friend! I hope to get a picture of the two of them to share with you sometime soon!

So thank you for letting me share our new garden sitting area with you. And a huge thank you to hubby, who made it all possible!!!

The swingset deck...

Several weeks ago I showed you a photo of Chip, sitting on a pile of wood in front of our shed. I mentioned that the wood was for a backyard project. But what I didn't tell you was that Chip was the foreman for that particular project...

(click any photos to enlarge)
Yes indeed. With Chip's input and hubby's expertise, we now have a fantastic new sitting area/deck under the girls' old swingset.

This is the sorry scene right before work commenced.

I am very (overly) attached to the girls' old swingset, so even though they are now 21 and 24, the old wood swingset has never left the yard. Too many good memories!

Anyhow, under Chip's supervision, Hubby built the frame for the deck... (Chip was instrumental in determining the height... Not so high that he couldn't jump up there, but high enough that he could hide underneath if the neighborhood cats were stalking him.)

Oh, boy - the start of a deck!!!

Then it was time to lay down the landscape plastic to prevent weeds from growing up through the boards.

Time to attach the deck boards to the frame... Woo hoo! It's really starting to take shape! (Chip made himself scarce when power tools were in use)...

Okay, the deck itself is now officially done...

Time to put a couple of chairs up there and give it a test drive!

Ahhhhhh.... perfect!!

Chip said break time was over and it was time to get back to work... That little guy is one tough task-master!!!

And now it was time to get creative...

... and map out a nice defined area for the bark mulch. After Chip okayed the bark mulch perimeter, he double-checked all his specs...
The perfect height for jumping from mulch to deck...

...and the perfect height for jumping from deck to swingset bar. Chip said it passed inspection and we were done!!!

He did such a good job overseeing this project that we paid him right away.

Thank goodness he works for peanuts...

Literally!

My next post will be the big reveal of the entire project with before & after photos...

Backyard bunny likes it so much he even hopped over from the patio to live in the swingset garden.

... and I can't say I blame him! It's where I'm spending all my time these days, too!
Till next post, wishing you warm sunshine and colorful gardens....

... blooms, bunnies and birdhouses

We are working simultaneously on several backyard projects..

...and we just finished this corner of the garden.

It actually started last year when we planted this beautiful blue salvia. It's in full bloom right now and is a hit with the bumblebees!

The lazy gardener (me) has once again plopped 6-packs of plants down in the rusty white metal plant stands. Over the years I've had really good luck with this easy solution, just as long as I don't skip the daily waterings (the little pots can dry out quickly)...

Black bark mulch has been spread around Mr. Bunny, his cottage birdhouse, and the flowers... (the enlarged birdhouse entry hole is compliments of a family of Sammy Squirrels who lived in it for several winters back when it was still hanging from a tree!)

And now it's time to sit and enjoy the fruits of our labor for a few minutes before we start on our next project! (And thank you, Jill, for telling me about these awesome cottage blue Adirondack chairs at Home Depot!!)
I'll show the entire completed project very soon!

The haunted carpenter's bench...

... has been moved back out to the deck. Not because it was haunted, (see this post)...

... but because it really belongs outside.

It's quite happy to be back among the clay pots and summer blooms...

I love old wood, and clearly this old bench has weathered many a storm and many summers of blazing sunshine... But now it's like an old work horse who has been put out to pature to enjoy its remaining years. No longer is it being used for heavy work. Its purpose now is to provide the perfect spot for flowers to bloom and garden tools to be stored...

All my little garden essentials fit nicely into this old crate on the bottom shelf....

... which is then covered by yet another old crate. Hidden away, but oh-so-handy when I need them.

Dad wanted me to say THANK YOU to all of you who left him such lovely comments!! I took this photo of him this morning as we were heading out to run errands before the thunderstorms moved in. He is holding onto a branch that he named "Harvey." We only have a one-step front stoop, so there are no railings. Dad always grabs this branch for support when stepping down onto the pathway. So this weekend when we trimmed back the shrubs a bit, we made sure to leave "Harvey" intact. When not in use, Harvey just gets tucked into the shrub. Dad was very glad to see that his friend survived the hedge trimmer!
Note: It's now several hours later and the storms are moving in! Wishing you a wonderful day filled with sunshine or rain, whatever your heart desires!
